In a significant move for the UK's aviation and employment sectors, EasyJet has announced the reopening of its base at Newcastle International Airport, set for March 2026. This development will introduce a three-aircraft operation, creating approximately 130 direct jobs for pilots, cabin crew, and engineers, and is expected to support around 1,200 jobs across the UK through its supply chain.

The decision marks EasyJet's return to Newcastle five years after closing its base there in 2020 amid pandemic-related challenges. The airline currently operates eight routes from Newcastle, including destinations like Malaga, Paris, and Amsterdam. With the new base, EasyJet plans to expand its network, offering additional routes and package holidays, further enhancing connectivity for the North East region.

This expansion aligns with EasyJet's broader growth strategy, which includes recent base openings at London Southend and Birmingham International Airports. The move also supports the UK government's initiatives to bolster regional economies and improve transport infrastructure. EasyJet's CEO, Kenton Jarvis, emphasised the importance of this development, stating that it will make travel more accessible for customers in the North East and beyond, while also contributing to the region's economic growth.
